ON-SITE SEO

On-site search engine optimisation (SEO) involves all of the content on your website, some of which is visible to customers, and some that isn’t. It basically includes doing everything possible to ensure you are making Google’s job at ranking your site easier.

If your business offers a product that is barely mentioned on your site, you won’t rank well on Google and possibly not at all. However, you can just as easily list the product on the site and still not see any movement. This is where on-site SEO comes into play. Questions to ask yourself include:

  • Is the description for that product informative and well-written?
  • Do you discuss that product in detail on a page of it’s own, or is it lost on a page with a heap of other products?
  • Do you have content such as images/videos/articles/pdfs for the product?
  • Are you blogging on your site about the benefits of that product?
  • Is your content about that product better than that of your competitors?
  • Has all of the necessary meta-tag information been added, such as page titles, descriptions, image alt tags, etc.?

If you answered ‘no’ to any of the above, or you just don’t know what I’m talking about, then you are most likely in need of some on-site SEO help.

OFF-SITE SEO

Off-site SEO, as opposed on-site SEO, involves all promotional material outside of your website.

Link building, and other common tactics used in years past to essentially trick search engines into boosting your website’s ranking are not only no longer effective at all, but these practices can actually lead to your site being penalised, or even (gulp) blacklisted from Google. The last thing any business wants is to be banished from Google.

In short, it isn’t enough to have a great website—you also have to tell the world about it, because the world isn’t going to come to you. It’s marketing, and it involves legwork. How can you increase your online exposure? What can you do to get your message out there?

Off-site and on-site SEO are interdependent. You need both of them in order for your website to succeed these days. Put simply, the best websites get the best rankings.
